Adaptive Bitrate for Videoconferencing

  • In Russian

To ensure high-quality video communication, it is essential to use adaptive streaming technologies that dynamically adjust the video bitrate based on the user's current network conditions. Adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms must efficiently utilize the available bandwidth to deliver the best possible video quality while minimizing delays.

In his talk, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various methods for achieving bitrate variability when encoder control is unavailable. The session will also cover feedback standards, such as RTCP Feedback, that can be used to detect network congestion. I will explain key concepts and mathematical models underlying bandwidth estimation algorithms on the SFU media server in simple terms. Additionally, I will share practical experience in using ABR algorithms in combination with Simulcast and Scalable Video Coding (SVC) technologies to improve video call quality in unstable network conditions.
